Do you like watching films?
Yes, I really do. Films are my favourite way to switch off after a long week, because for two hours I can forget about deadlines completely. I'm also part of a small group of friends who swap recommendations constantly, so there's always something on my list waiting to be watched.
What kind of films do you enjoy most?
I'm drawn to thrillers and anything with a clever plot, the sort of film where you have to pay attention or you'll miss a vital clue. I also have a soft spot for well-made Bangladeshi films about ordinary lives. What I can't stand are horror films; I end up watching half of them through my fingers.
Do you prefer watching films at the cinema or at home?
For big action films, the cinema wins easily, since the sound and the huge screen make it feel like an event. Going to a multiplex in a shopping mall with friends is a proper outing for us. For most other films, though, I prefer home, mainly because tickets add up and I can watch in my pyjamas.
What was the last film you watched?
The last one was a Korean thriller I streamed on Friday night. Without giving too much away, it was about a family hiding a secret from their neighbours, and the tension built so slowly that I didn't notice how late it was getting. I finished it around two in the morning and then couldn't sleep.
Is there a film you have watched more than once?
Yes, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which I've probably seen four times. Every time I rewatch it, I notice small details I'd missed before, in the costumes or the landscapes. It's also a comfort thing; during exam breaks I'll put it on simply because I know it will lift my mood, even though it's incredibly long.
Do you like watching films from other countries?
Very much. Apart from Bangladeshi films, I watch a lot of Indian, Korean and Iranian cinema, plus the occasional Hollywood blockbuster. Subtitles don't bother me at all; in fact, foreign films show me how ordinary people live in other places. Iranian films in particular surprised me, because they tell powerful stories with very simple settings.
