How your band score is worked out

Every mock is scored automatically when you finish, using the same rules as the real test, so you always know where the number came from.

Listening and Reading

Your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band with official-style tables. 30 correct answers is band 7.0 in Listening; band 7.5 needs 32 in Listening and 33 in Reading.

Writing

Each task is assessed against the four official criteria. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1.

  • Task Achievement / Response
  • Coherence and Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Speaking

Your recorded answers to all three parts are assessed against the four speaking criteria.

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Pronunciation

A person can step in

Writing and Speaking bands are automatic estimates. An administrator can review any attempt and override the score.

Your overall band is the average, rounded

Add the four section bands and divide by four. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Anything below those points rounds down.

Questions, answered

Short answers about the free course, the weekly mock exam and how scoring works.

Ready to start? Create your free account

Is Abroadway really free?

Yes, completely. All 96 lessons, the 12 mock tests, the model answers and the band feedback are free, with no trial period, no paid tier and no card details. Abroadway exists so that talented students can prepare for IELTS without paying for private tutoring.

Do I need an account?

No account is needed to read the lessons, the Writing samples or the Speaking cue cards, or to use the band score calculator. A free account adds your personal daily study plan, progress tracking, flashcards and the timed weekly mock exam with saved results.

Is this the official IELTS test?

No. Abroadway is an independent preparation platform and is not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge. The mock exams follow the IELTS Academic format and timings so practice feels like the real thing, but you book your actual test with an official test centre.

Is it for IELTS Academic or General Training?

IELTS Academic, the version universities ask for. Every lesson, the Reading passages and Writing Task 1 are built for the Academic test.

How long does the course take?

The 96 lessons add up to about 47 hours. At the default of one hour a day, with your mock exam day kept free, that is about 9 weeks. You can choose anything from 15 minutes to 4 hours a day.

How are Writing and Speaking marked?

Automatically, against the four official criteria for each skill: Task Achievement or Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy for Writing; Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation for Speaking. The bands are estimates to guide your practice, not official scores.

What do I need for the Speaking practice?

A working microphone and a quiet room. An examiner voice asks the questions, including a Part 2 cue card with one minute to prepare, and speech recognition in your browser captures your answers. Chrome or Edge works best.

What if my internet drops during a mock exam?

Every answer is saved on your device the moment you type it and synced to the server as you go. If the connection drops, your answers are kept and you carry on when it returns.

Is there Bangla support?

Yes. Vocabulary comes with Bangla meanings, and difficult explanations include Bangla notes, so tricky points make sense the first time.

What happens if I miss a study day?

Your plan rebalances, spreading the lessons you missed over the days ahead. If you have a streak freeze, it covers the missed day so your streak survives.

Your first lesson takes 20 minutes.
