Common errors Bangladeshi candidates make

The same errors appear in essay after essay: discuss about, informations, I am agree, cope up with, more better, missing articles and comma splices. Learn why they happen, how to fix them for good, and practise until the correct forms are automatic.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Recognise and correct the errors most typical of Bangladeshi candidates
  • Use articles (a / an / the / no article) correctly in essay sentences
  • Avoid plural uncountables, subject–verb agreement errors and tense shifts
  • Fix fixed-phrase and preposition errors (discuss about, cope up with, married with, interested about)
  • Remove comma splices, capitalisation errors, translated patterns and memorised phrases
  • Use would only for hypothetical meaning

Overuse of would

Articles: a, an, the or nothing?

Bangla has no articles, so this is the most frequent error type for Bangladeshi writers. In essays, four rules cover almost every case.

Rule 1: general statements → plural or uncountable noun with NO article

  • ✓ Children need routine. ✓ Education is a basic right. ✓ Technology changes quickly.
  • ✗ The education is a basic right. ✗ The technology changes quickly. (Use the only if you mean one specific technology already mentioned.)

Rule 2: a singular countable noun can never stand alone

It needs a / an, the, or another determiner (my, this, every, each).

  • ✗ Government should act. → ✓ The government should act. (one specific government) / ✓ Governments should act. (governments in general)
  • ✗ Student who works hard will succeed. → ✓ A student who works hard… / ✓ Students who work hard…

Rule 3: the when the reader knows which one

  • Unique or shared things: the environment, the internet, the economy, the world, the media, the public, and the government of a particular country.
  • Things already mentioned or defined: the policy described above, the cost of living, the education of girls (the of-phrase makes it specific).

Rule 4: a or an depends on SOUND, not spelling

  • a university, a European country, a one-year course (these begin with a /j/ or /w/ sound)
  • an hour, an honest politician, an MBA, an SSC certificate (these begin with a vowel sound: an ess-ess-see)

Usually no article in general statements: society, nature, people, health, life, work, mankind. ✗ the society, ✗ the nature, ✗ the people are busy (when you mean people in general). Also go to university and go to school when you mean study there.

Uncountable nouns: no -s, no ‘a’

Verbs that take NO preposition

discuss a topic (not about) · emphasise a point (not on) · enter a room (not into) · reach a decision (not to) · mention a fact (not about) · request help (not for; but the noun is a request for) · lack skills (the verb has no of; the noun is a lack of skills) · comprise three parts (or consist of three parts, never comprise of) · attend a class (attend to means deal with)

Words that need a specific preposition

  • depend on (✗ depend of)
  • interested in (✗ interested about / on)
  • married to (✗ married with)
  • responsible for (✗ responsible of)
  • contribute to (✗ contribute in)
  • focus on (✗ focus in)

  • an effect / an impact on (✗ an impact to)
  • a solution to a problem (✗ solution of)
  • access to (✗ access of)
  • capable of doing (✗ capable to do)
  • prevent someone from doing (✗ prevent someone to do)
  • result in (cause → effect) · result from (effect ← cause)

Phrasal verb and redundancy traps

  • cope up with → cope with. Cope up does not exist; it is a blend of cope with and keep up with.
  • return back, revert back, repeat again, reply back → return, revert, repeat, reply. The back or again is already inside the verb.
  • pass time → spend time. Pass the time exists, but it means doing something to stop feeling bored while you wait.
  • I am agree → I agree. Agree is a verb, not an adjective. Compare: I am sure (adjective) / I agree (verb).
  • more better, more easier, most best → better, easier, best. Use much / far to intensify: much better.
  • In my point of view → From my point of view / In my view / In my opinion. According to me is not used in this way either.

Subject–verb agreement traps

SubjectVerbExample
The number of + plural nounsingularThe number of students has risen.
A number of + plural noun (= many)pluralA number of students have complained.
One of the + plural nounsingularOne of the main reasons is cost.
Each / Every / Everyone / NobodysingularEvery citizen has a duty to vote.
People / Children / The policepluralPeople are worried. The police are investigating.
An -ing subjectsingularUsing phones while driving is dangerous.
A long subject with ofagrees with the head nounThe impact of these policies is clear. (not are)
There is / There areagrees with the noun that followsThere are many reasons… (not There is many reasons)

Tense consistency

Task 2 is mostly written in the present simple (general truths), with the present perfect for recent trends, will for predictions and would for hypothetical proposals. Do not drift into the past tense unless you are describing a past example.

  • ✓ Online shopping has grown rapidly in recent years. It offers convenience, but it is harming small shops.
  • ✗ Online shopping grew rapidly. It offered convenience, but it will harm small shops. (no reason for the past tense, then a random switch)
  • ✗ I am living in Dhaka since 2015. → ✓ I have lived / have been living in Dhaka since 2015. (since + a point in time needs the present perfect)

The overuse of would

Many South Asian writers use would as a polite or ‘formal’ version of will or the present simple. In English, would signals that something is hypothetical or conditional.

  • ✗ Exercise would improve mental health. (It does. This is a fact.) → ✓ Exercise improves mental health.
  • ✗ In this essay, I would discuss both views. → ✓ This essay will discuss both views.
  • ✓ A tax on sugary drinks would reduce obesity. (Correct: a proposal that does not exist yet.)
  • ✓ If governments raised fuel prices, people would drive less. (Second conditional.)

Quick test: Is it a fact? → present simple. A prediction? → will. An imagined proposal or condition? → would.

Run-on sentences and comma splices

✗ One run-on sentence

Dhaka is one of the most crowded city in the world, millions of people comes here every year for job, the roads cannot handle the traffic so people waste hours every day and it is affecting the economy also the health of people.

✓ Three clear sentences

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Millions of people move there every year in search of work, and its roads cannot cope with the resulting traffic. As a result, commuters lose several hours every day, which harms both the economy and public health.

A comma cannot join two complete sentences. The left version strings four sentences together with commas and *and*, so the reader has no idea where one idea ends. Fix it with a full stop, a semicolon, a conjunction (*and, but, so*), or by turning one clause into a relative clause (*which harms…*). Notice also the hidden errors: *one of the most crowded **cities*** (plural after *one of the*), *people **move*** (plural verb), *for **work*** (or *for jobs*), and *both the economy and public health* instead of the awkward *the economy also the health of people*.

Writing Task 2 practice

120+ words · 15 min

Editing practice: correct this paragraph.

This body paragraph was written for the question: Some people think that students should go abroad for university, while others believe they should study in their own country. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It contains more than 15 errors of the kinds covered in this lesson. Rewrite the whole paragraph correctly. Keep the ideas; fix the errors and replace the memorised opening.

Nowadays, studying abroad is a burning question. Many student goes to foreign country for higher studies because they can get better educations there. In my point of view, the main advantage is that they can gain many knowledges. They also learn how to cope up with different culture, this makes them more independent. However, studying abroad is very costly and many family cannot afford it. Students who studies abroad also face many problem, for example they feel lonely and they cannot concentrate in their study. Some of them never return back to their country, which is a big loss for Bangladesh. So I am agree that studying in own country is more better for most of the students.

Your personal error-elimination routine

  1. 1

    1. Keep an error log

After every essay you write (and every piece of feedback you receive), record each error in three columns: what I wrote, the correct version, the type of error. After five essays, your personal top five will be obvious.

  2. 2

    2. Learn the correct chunk, not just the rule

Memorise discuss the issue, cope with stress, depend on, interested in, the number of… is as whole phrases. Say them aloud and write them in your own sentences. Correct chunks replace wrong ones only through repetition.

  3. 3

    3. Proofread by category

In the last four minutes of the exam, do not just reread. Scan once for each of your top errors: (a) every noun: plural? article? (b) every verb: agreement? tense? (c) every sentence: one subject and one finite verb per clause, and no comma splices.

  4. 4

    4. Use safer structures until the error is fixed

If you often get a structure wrong (for example although… but), use a simpler one (but) in the exam until practice makes the correct form automatic.

  5. 5

    5. Retest yourself

Repeat the quizzes in this lesson after one week and again after one month. Spaced repetition is what turns a corrected error into a habit.
