The overview: your most important paragraph

The overview is the key to band 7+ for Task Achievement. Learn to find the main trends, extremes and striking changes in any visual, and express them in two precise sentences with no specific numbers.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Explain why a clear overview is required for band 7 in Task Achievement
  • Use five questions to identify overview features: direction, extremes, the most striking change, patterns and exceptions
  • Write overviews for line graphs, pie charts, tables and process diagrams
  • Use natural overview language and combine two features in one sentence
  • Avoid the overview killers: specific numbers, vagueness, single-category focus, reasons and opinions

What an overview is (and what it isn’t)

An overview is a summary of the main features of the whole visual, written in general terms. Think of it as the answer to one question:

If someone looked at this chart for ten seconds and then closed their eyes, what would they remember?

They would not remember that chicken consumption was 170 grams in 2010. They would remember that chicken shot up and fish stayed on top. That is your overview.

An overview ISAn overview is NOT
2 sentences (occasionally 3) about the whole visuala list of specific figures
the main trends, the biggest and smallest, the most striking changea detailed description of one category
general, but specific enough to be informativevague (‘there were many changes’)
a separate paragraph, usually the seconda repeat of the introduction
purely factuala conclusion with opinions, reasons or advice

Five questions that find your overview

  1. 1

    Which way is everything moving?

The general direction: up, down or stable? Do all the categories follow the same pattern, or do they split into risers and fallers? Overall, two of the foods became more popular, while the other two declined.

  2. 2

    What is biggest and smallest?

The highest and lowest categories, and whether the ranking stayed the same. Phrases like remained the most popular throughout the period or was consistently the lowest are classic overview material.

  3. 3

What is the most striking change?

The fastest growth, a dramatic fall, one category overtaking another, something that doubled or disappeared. If your eye goes there first, the examiner’s will too.

  4. 4

Is there a pattern or an exception?

Older systems are larger. The gap between the groups narrowed. All categories rose, with the exception of … Patterns and exceptions show the examiner you have looked at the visual as a whole, which is exactly what an overview is for.

  5. 5

What does this type of visual need?

Processes: the number of stages, where the process starts and ends, whether it is linear or a cycle, and any phases (natural vs mechanical). Maps: the overall transformation (more built-up, less green space) and what stayed the same.

What to look for in each type of visual

Line graph

Direction of each line; highest and lowest; crossings; peaks

Bar chart over time

Which categories grew or shrank; changes in ranking

Overall, every category grew except X, and Y remained the largest throughout.

Bar chart or table for one year

Largest and smallest; groups of similar items; patterns across rows and columns

Overall, X had by far the highest figures, and there is a clear link between A and B.

Pie charts

Biggest slices; biggest changes in share; what stayed similar

Overall, X accounted for the largest share in both years, but its dominance declined as Y grew.

Process diagram

Number of stages; start and end; linear or cycle; phases

Overall, there are eight stages in the process, which begins with … and ends with …

Maps

The overall transformation; what was added or removed; what remained

Overall, the village became far more developed, with farmland replaced by housing, although the river remained.

The main feature of each, and a link between them if there is one

Overall, the population grew steadily, and by 2020 most residents lived in apartments.

Where to put it

Put the overview directly after the introduction, in its own paragraph. Some strong answers put it at the end instead, and that is acceptable. But putting it second has three advantages:

  1. The examiner finds it immediately.
  2. It can never be lost if you run out of time.
  3. Writing it first forces you to understand the whole visual before the details, so your detail paragraphs are better organised.

Avoid labelling it In conclusion. The phrase is not banned, but it pulls you into essay habits: opinions, and repeating the introduction.

Visual A (line graph). Apply the five questions before you read the overviews below.

Visual A: weak vs strong overview

Weak (band 5–6) ✗

Version 1: Overall, fish consumption rose from 320 grams to 380 grams, while chicken consumption increased from 40 grams to 300 grams.

Version 2: Overall, there were many changes in the consumption of food over the period.

Strong (band 8) ✓

Overall, fish remained the most widely eaten of the four foods throughout the period, but the most striking change was the dramatic growth in chicken consumption, which overtook both beef and pulses. By contrast, the consumption of beef and pulses declined steadily.

Version 1 is two body-paragraph details with numbers, and it says nothing about the two foods that declined. Version 2 is so general that it could describe any graph. The strong overview answers the five questions: direction (two foods up, two down), biggest (fish throughout), most striking change (chicken’s surge) and a change in ranking (overtaking beef and pulses), all without a single figure.

Visual B (two pie charts). With pie charts, look for the biggest slices and the biggest changes in share.

Visual B: weak vs strong overview

Weak (band 5–6) ✗

Version 1: Overall, in 2000 food was 45% and housing was 20%, and in 2020 food was 30% and housing was 28%.

Version 2: Overall, people in 2020 spent less on food because they had to pay more for rent.

Strong (band 8) ✓

Overall, food remained the largest item of household spending in both years, but its share fell markedly, while the proportion spent on housing grew until it almost matched food. Transport, education and healthcare all took up a larger share of household budgets in 2020 than in 2000.

Version 1 is a list of four figures, and it ignores four of the six categories. Version 2 invents a cause (‘because they had to pay more for rent’) and wrongly treats housing as rent only. The strong overview gives the ranking (food largest in both years), the most striking change (food’s falling share and housing catching up) and the general pattern for the smaller categories. It uses ‘share’ and ‘proportion’ correctly because pie charts show parts of a whole.

Visual C (table, a single year). There is no change over time here, so look for rankings, patterns and exceptions.

Visual C: weak vs strong overview

Weak (band 5–6) ✗

Version 1: Overall, the table shows information about the rail systems of five cities, including the year they opened, their length, the number of stations and the number of passengers.

Version 2: Overall, Ardon’s network is 402 km long and has 270 stations, which is the most.

Strong (band 8) ✓

Overall, the older a city’s rail system, the larger it tends to be: the networks that opened earliest are the longest and have the most stations, while Elsby’s, the newest, is the smallest on every measure. However, the longest network, in Ardon, is not the busiest, as Belport’s system carries the most passengers.

Version 1 only repeats the introduction: it lists the columns but says nothing about the data. Version 2 is a detail about one city, with numbers. The strong overview finds a pattern across the whole table (age linked to size), the extreme (Elsby smallest on every measure) and the exception that breaks the pattern (Ardon is longest but Belport is busiest). With tables, patterns and exceptions are the overview.

The diagram below shows how raw jute is turned into sacks.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features.

For this exercise, write the overview paragraph only: two sentences describing the process as a whole.

The production of jute sacks
Step 1: Harvesting

Jute plants about four months old are cut by hand on the farm

Step 2: Retting

Bundles of stalks are soaked in ponds or slow rivers for two to three weeks to loosen the fibre

Step 3: Stripping

Fibres are pulled from the softened stalks by hand

Step 4: Washing and drying

Fibres are rinsed in clean water and hung in the sun for several days

Step 5: Grading and transport

Dried fibre is sorted by hand into grades, tied into bundles and taken to the mill

Step 6: Spinning

At the mill, machines comb the fibre and spin it into yarn

Step 7: Weaving

Power looms weave the yarn into hessian cloth

Step 8: Cutting and stitching

The cloth is cut and machine-stitched into sacks, ready for sale
