Prepositions and dependent prepositions

Prepositions appear in almost every sentence, so one wrong habit ('discuss about', 'reach to', 'since three years') repeats all through your essay. Learn the dependent prepositions IELTS topics use most, the exact data prepositions for Task 1 (by vs to, increase in vs increase of), time and place prepositions, and the Bangla-influenced errors examiners see every day.

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Use the dependent prepositions after high-frequency IELTS verbs, adjectives and nouns (focus on, result in, lead to, contribute to, responsible for, concerned about, impact on)
  • Describe data precisely with by, to, from…to, at, of and in (rose by 5% vs rose to 5%; an increase in sales vs an increase of 10%)
  • Choose the right preposition of time and place, including for/since/during, by/until and map language
  • Recognise when a verb needs NO preposition (discuss, reach, enter, emphasise, mention, attend)
  • Eliminate common Bangla-influenced errors: discuss about, return back, married with, reach to, cope up with, according to me

Three kinds of preposition you need to control

  1. Dependent prepositions: fixed partners of particular verbs, adjectives and nouns: depend on, responsible for, an increase in. There is often no logical rule, so learn them as chunks, never as single words.
  2. Prepositions of time and place: in 2020, on Monday, at night, to the north of the park.
  3. Data prepositions: the small words that make Task 1 numbers accurate: rose by 5%, peaked at 80, an increase of 10%.

Two grammar rules that apply to every preposition

Rule 1: after a preposition, use a noun, a pronoun or an -ing form, never a base verb. She succeeded in getting a scholarship (not in get). This includes the preposition to: I look forward to hearing from you · These measures could contribute to reducing pollution · Many people object to paying higher taxes. (Test: if you can put a noun after to, it is a preposition and needs -ing.)

Rule 2: the verb and the noun from the same family often take different patterns. We discussed the problem (no preposition) but We had a discussion about the problem. This is the source of many errors, so it gets its own box below.

Band 6 vs band 8: the same Task 2 paragraph

Band 6: preposition errors

According to me, the government should be responsible about protecting the environment. Pollution has a negative impact to people's health, and it can result to serious diseases. Many people are not aware about the danger, so we need to discuss about this issue in schools. Factories should focus in reducing waste.

Band 8: accurate collocations

In my view, governments should be primarily responsible for protecting the environment. Pollution has a severe impact on public health and can result in serious respiratory diseases. Since many people are still largely unaware of the dangers, schools need to discuss the issue openly, and factories should focus on reducing their waste instead of simply paying fines.

The band 6 paragraph contains seven preposition errors in five sentences ('according to me', 'responsible about', 'impact to', 'result to', 'aware about', 'discuss about', 'focus in'). The ideas are fine, but the reader keeps tripping over small errors, so very few sentences are error-free. The band 8 version uses the correct chunks and adds precise vocabulary (severe, respiratory, instead of). Fixing prepositions alone would move the first paragraph much closer to band 7 for accuracy.
